Welcome, fellow adventurers, to Assen, the capital of Drenthe! It is a strange sort of capital — one that began not as a fortress or a market town, but as a punishment. In 1227, Drenthe's peasants slaughtered the army of the Bishop of Utrecht at the Battle of Ane, and as penance the survivors were ordered to build a convent. That convent, Maria in Campis, eventually settled on a sandy plateau around 1258 and slowly grew a village around its gates. Six centuries later, the same patch of ground is a lively provincial capital known the world over for one deafening weekend each summer, when the roar of the Dutch TT motorcycle races fills the air. On this walk you will trace that whole arc: from the quiet grassy Brink where the nuns once prayed, past the grand villas that earned Assen the nickname 'Stad der Paleizen' (City of Palaces), to a monument celebrating the racers who turned this sleepy convent town into a household name.
