Walk from the station out into that dune fringe and you'll pass a reclaimed sand quarry, a rest stop near where a Second World War bunker once hid Rembrandt's Night Watch, and the ghost of a whole neighbourhood the German occupier demolished in 1943 to clear the ground for the Atlantikwall. Loop back into the village and you'll meet a Roman-era face reconstructed from a 1,600-year-old skeleton, two different cannonballs lodged in two different buildings, and the square where, in 1999, Castricum marked 200 years since the battle that briefly put this quiet village's name on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
