Den Burg

Welcome, fellow adventurers, to Den Burg — the beating heart of Texel, the largest of the Dutch Wadden islands! Don't let its small size fool you: this is no ordinary village. Its very name means 'The Fortress,' and beneath the bakeries, boutiques and brown cafes lining its narrow streets lies the buried outline of a fortified settlement that once stood here more than a thousand years ago, home to a Frisian warlord who ruled the island long before the Netherlands existed. Follow the curve of the streets closely today — you're walking the ghost of a moat. Over the centuries Den Burg grew from that ring-shaped stronghold into a proper market village, with sheep traders, wool weavers, a fish market, almshouses for the destitute, and a church that has watched over the Groeneplaats since the Middle Ages — and still bears the scars of the fighting that made this quiet island, almost unbelievably, the site of one of the very last battles of the Second World War in Europe. Along the way, answer a question at each of the seven stops to earn a letter. Collect them all, and you'll unlock the secret word waiting for you at the end!
