Dordrecht's biggest moments were never loud ones. In 1572 the rebellious cities of Holland sent secret delegates here for the Eerste Vrije Statenvergadering, the First Free Assembly of the States, the meeting that effectively founded what would become the Dutch Republic — all while still nominally at war with, and subject to, the King of Spain. Less than fifty years later, the city hosted the Synod of Dort, the great Reformed church council of 1618-19 that shaped Dutch Protestantism for centuries and gave the Netherlands its first official Bible translation.
