Heemskerk

Welcome, fellow adventurers, to the Heemskerk Village Tour! Get ready to walk through a place that was, for centuries, a genuine castle village: a low strip of reclaimed coastal land where the medieval Counts of Holland once needed real defences against raiding West-Frisians, and built bulwark after bulwark to hold the line. Heemskerk once had as many as six or ten fortified houses, depending on who's counting, and two of the grandest still stand today. You'll start at the moated grounds of Slot Assumburg, a 13th-century stronghold now serving as a youth hostel, before crossing the old village heart around the Dorpskerk — first mentioned in 1063 — and the former town hall on Burgemeester Nielenplein. From there you'll pass the neo-Renaissance towers of the Sint-Laurentiuskerk and a former Catholic girls' school that now safeguards the village's memory, before following a historic lime-tree avenue north to Kasteel Marquette, an estate that still borders the great Noord-Hollands Duinreservaat. Answer the quiz at each stop to earn a letter — collect them all and you'll be able to crack the final puzzle. Let's get walking!
