Two millennia ago this was Coriovallum, a Roman settlement founded exactly where two great roads crossed, complete with a public bathhouse whose excavated ruins still lie beneath the modern centre. Eighteen centuries later, coal turned a village of a few thousand people into a mining city of tens of thousands almost overnight, and when the mines closed in the 1960s and 70s, Heerlen had to reinvent itself all over again. Along the way it built one of the most influential glass buildings of the twentieth century, and it built, then quietly demolished, a whole network of pedestrian tunnels meant to keep people and cars apart. On this walk you'll stand at an actual mineshaft tower, trace a vanished underground waterfall, look Roman soldier Flaccus's grave in the eye through freshly laid mosaic paving, and finish on a square that once traded cattle instead of coffee. It's a short, dense loop of a little over 2 kilometres through a genuinely compact city centre.
