Welcome, fellow adventurers, to Lelystad's Bataviahaven — a small stretch of quayside standing on ground that was the bottom of the Zuiderzee within living memory! Named after the engineer Cornelis Lely, who dreamt up the plan to tame this sea, Lelystad rose out of a drained polder in 1967. On this walk you'll stand on the old sea dike, meet a giant crouching steel figure staring out over the Markermeer, pass a water-sports beach and the harbour that gives Bataviahaven its name, find a giant blue-eyed head trying to keep its head above water, step into the heritage centre built above the largest ship graveyard on dry land anywhere in the world, browse the outlet village that shares the Batavia name, board a full-size replica of a legendary VOC shipwreck, and finish beside an unfinished 17th-century warship frozen mid-construction. It's a leisurely loop of just under 4 kilometres. Answer the quiz at each stop to earn a letter. Collect them all and you'll be able to solve the final puzzle!
