Welcome, fellow adventurers, to the Roermond City Tour! This handsome little city in Limburg, cradled where the River Roer meets the Maas, has been quietly keeping secrets since the 13th century — none stranger or more touching than the two lovers' graves you're about to visit. Get ready for Romanesque abbeys, a witch's prison, an empress's bridge, and a cemetery wall that couldn't quite keep two hearts apart. Roermond takes its very name from the Roer, the river it once stood on alone — it was only in 1342 that engineers diverted the Maas past the city too, turning a modest riverside settlement into a trading crossroads for salt, cloth, grain and wine. Count Gerard III van Gelre founded an abbey here around 1218 and granted the town city rights soon after; when he and his wife Margaretha van Brabant died, they were buried together beneath the abbey church in what's now considered the oldest double tomb of a married couple in the Netherlands — the famous 'graf der gelieven', the grave of the lovers. Since 1559 Roermond has been a bishop's seat, and today it's just as well known for something far more modern: the sprawling Designer Outlet a short walk north of the old town, drawing millions of shoppers a year to a city that once measured its wealth in barges of grain. Along this walk, answer a question at each stop to earn a letter — collect them all and you'll be able to solve the final puzzle!
